Lunch Peak Lookout

On August 23rd our family drove to a Forest Fire Lookout located outside of Sandpoint and stayed the night. It was an amazing trip. These lookout towers were where forest rangers used to stay watching for possible forest fires. These buildings are located on the hightest mountain peaks and one can see for miles and miles in every direction. We drove for about 2 hrs before we reached our destination.

Lunch Peak was built in 1971 and was manned until 1985. Now people can rent it for the night online and enjoy the experience. It is an amazing feeling to be on top of a mountain. There is enough room for the building, and our car to pull up and make a 3 point turn to return back down the hill. Braydon was forced to quickly overcome his fear of heights. The deck you see wraps around the whole building. The open room has windows so you can see 360 degrees. There is tile floor and a picnic table inside.

We went on a short hike. Next time we plan on staying 2 nights. We learned by reading the other journal entries that there is a beautiful lake we could hike to where we could spend a whole day.

This was looking to the west.

After BB guns and sling shots, and naming a few chimpmunks, Chris grilled us some drumsticks to go with our picnic dinner. There is no elecricity in the tower so we hurried to eat before the sunset.

We witnessed a beautiful sunset that just kept getting better and better. The neatest part was as the sun was setting in the west, the moon was rising in the east.

To the SW we overlooked Sandpoint and Lake Pend Oreille. And to the North we could see Canada.

The kids helped build a fire and we roasted marhmellows. When the sun went down, the temperature dropped, so we were glad for such a great fire.

This is one of my favorite pictures of the trip. All summer long we were looking for one of his running shoes. We never found it and instead brought his snow/rain boots. While eating his Smore, he was singing his heart out and it made us all smile!
